Egg Rupture But Not Conceived Why

Egg Rupture But Not Conceived Why

If you are anyone undergoing IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) or IUI (Intrauterine Insemination), monitoring your ovulation is crucial.

Typically, you will be under constant follicular monitoring throughout the IVF or IUI treatment.

In IVF, once the egg is ruptured via the rupturing injection, hCG (human Chorionic Gonadotropin) injection, the egg will be retrieved for fertilization in the laboratory.

In IUI, after the rupturing of the follicle, the insemination procedure will take place.

Thus,  the egg rupture or ovulation part is crucial for further treatment in Assisted Reproductive Technique (ART) treatments or simply, in the attempt to achieve pregnancy.

What if You Do Not Conceive After Egg Rupture?

Many factors hinder conception even after successful ovulation. Most importantly, male and female fertility factors have to be considered to ensure that conception takes place after ovulation.

Not Conceiving After Egg Rupture in IVF

In IVF, if you do not conceive after egg retrieval, it means that the eggs retrieved have failed to be fertilized.

The reasons for the failure of fertilization include:

  • Failing to decondense the head of the sperm during the fertilization process
  • Non-survival of eggs after retrieval
  • Non-survival of eggs after the Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
  • Failing to activate the eggs to be involved in the fertilization process

Not Conceiving After Egg Rupture in IUI

In IUI, the timing for insemination may have been missed during ovulation or fertility window. The other fertility issues that could affect successful conception include:

Sperm disorders: Low-quality sperm with low motility, poor morphology, and less quantity of sperm affect the fertilization process.

Ovulation disorders: Ovulation disorders like PCOS, hypothyroidism, or hyperthyroidism can disrupt ovulation.

Obstructed fallopian tube: With an obstructed fallopian tube the movement of egg and sperm gets restricted, making fertilization impossible.

Abnormal uterine shape: The shape of the uterus is important in aiding the fertilized egg to implant on the uterine lining. An irregular uterine shape prevents embryo implantation.

Endometriosis:  The scarring of the uterine lining during endometriosis removal can affect the implantation process.

Fibroids: Fibroids can restrict the movement of egg and sperm and hinder fertilization.

Poor health: Poor physical and mental health can reflect on fertility treatment. Cancer treatments also impede the ovulation process.

Age: With the increase in age fertility rate decreases. Age can affect the timing of ovulation, menses, and the fertilization process.

When to Consult a Fertility Doctor?

Wait for two to three weeks after the embryo transfer process in IVF and the insemination process in IUI. If you still receive a negative pregnancy result, you can consult your fertility doctor to analyze the reason behind failure in fertilization or implantation.

Also, if your period is delayed after receiving a negative pregnancy result, you can consult your fertility doctor regarding it and receive help.

How Many Cycles of IUI or IVF to Take to Attain Pregnancy?

With every IUI or IVF cycle your level of fertility increases. So, based on your doctor’s advice and your willingness, you can take up as many cycles as required to achieve pregnancy.

Normally, 6 cycles of IUI are recommended before moving on to IVF treatments.

If you are taking IVF treatment, the number of cycles to take will be based on your age, choice of embryo for transfer, and doctor’s recommendation.

Conclusion

The journey toward pregnancy may not be easy all the time. It could be confusing, worrisome, and at times frustrating.

However, modern fertility techniques like IUI and IVF have made fertility treatments less painful and more successful.

You will be under monitoring during the treatment time. Yet, in case of any worries you can contact your fertility doctor immediately.

Stay strong and we wish you a successful pregnancy!

FAQs

What is egg rupture?

Egg rupture refers to the ovulation phase in which a mature follicle in the ovary releases the egg it contains.

How many eggs are required in IVF?

In IVF around 10 to 15 eggs are required for achieving successful embryo development. Follicle-stimulating hormones are administered at the start of the treatment to enable the release of more eggs in a single cycle.

How many eggs are required in IUI?

In IUI, only one egg is required in a cycle for fertilization. The number of eggs needed also differs with age.
