IVF TREATMENT

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a game-changer in the world of fertility. It has become a beacon of hope for millions of couples who strive to make their dream of becoming parents happen.

IVF comes to the rescue when the factors of male and female fertility are not ideal.

If you are adopting IVF to achieve your dream of pregnancy, it is advisable to get some knowledge on the treatment beforehand and prepare accordingly.

What is IVF?

IVF is one of the highly successful assisted reproductive techniques (ART). The complete process of fertilization takes place in the laboratory, outside the mother’s womb in IVF. This has made the technique earn the household name “Test Tube Baby Technique.”

In the process of IVF with a donor egg, eggs collected from the female donor and sperm collected from the male donor are combined in a petri dish for fertilization

From collecting the eggs to transferring the developed embryo into the mother’s womb IVF includes a series of processes.

The female and male donors could be the parents themselves and if required, it would involve non-parents who are eligible for egg or sperm donation.

Why is IVF Performed?

IVF treatment is recommended by fertility doctors when the following factors hinder couples from successfully conceiving a child:

  • Sperm disorders
  • Ovulation disorders
  • Obstructed fallopian tube
  • Endometriosis
  • Fibroids
  • Ill health
  • Age

You can also choose the frozen embryo option in IVF if you wish to get pregnant later.

How is IVF Done?

IVF generally involves five stages.

  • Ovarian Stimulation
  • Egg Retrieval
  • Sperm Collection
  • Embryo Development and
  • Embryo Transfer

1.Ovarian Stimulation

The ovarian stimulation process is also superovulation. The follicles in the ovaries are stimulated using follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and other medications, and are made to produce more than one egg in a single menstrual cycle.

2.Egg Retrieval

When the follicles mature and the eggs reach around 15-18 mm in diameter the hCG (human Chorionic Gonadotropin) injection is administered to make the follicles rupture.

After 24 to 36 hours of administering the hCG injection, the eggs are retrieved using a small catheter under ultrasound monitoring.

3.Sperm Collection

In the meantime when the eggs are collected the sperm is also collected or collected earlier and stored.

Sperm can be either collected via masturbation or through procedures like
Testicular Sperm Aspiration (TESA), Testicular Sperm Extraction (TESE), and Microepididymal Sperm Aspiration (MESA) from male donors suffering from infertility factors.

4.Embryo Development

The collected egg and sperm are placed in a petri dish for fertilization. The fertilization process can be carried out either through the conventional method or the Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) method.

The fertilization process is carried out in the laboratory for around 20 hours to 5 days until the embryo reaches the cleavage or blastocyst stage respectively.

If you choose to freeze the embryos for later use, the embryos are cryopreserved in this stage.

5.Embryo Transfer

The final stage is the embryo transfer stage in which the embryo is transferred into the mother’s uterus either during the cleavage stage or during the blastocyst stage.

The embryo transfer procedure involves no incisions and a small catheter is used to introduce the embryo into the womb.

After the transfer of the embryo, you will be asked to wait for two weeks before taking a pregnancy test.

How to Prepare for IVF Treatment?

The IVF treatment demands both physical and emotional stamina. You can undergo the treatment only if you are strong and determined enough to realize your dream of being a parent.

Before the IVF treatment, you would have to take a few tests like:

  • Blood tests
  • Ovarian Reserve Testing
  • Tubal Patency Test
  • Semen Analysis
  • Screening for infectious diseases, etc.

An examination of previous medical history will also be done.

How Long Does an IVF Cycle Take?

An IVF cycle takes around 6 to 8 weeks typically. The ovarian stimulation stage will take around 10 to 14 days followed by the egg and semen retrieval processes.

The fertilization process will take around 5 days. You would also have to wait for another two weeks to take the pregnancy test.

Including the pre-testing and post-testing period the IVF will take at least 6 weeks per cycle.

The Success Rate for IVF

The first cycle of IVF usually carries a 40 to 60% of success.

One of the advantages of IVF is that with each treatment the rate of success increases.

So, it is advisable to not give up and take IVF treatments in a series to achieve pregnancy.

The success rate is also influenced by factors such as age, health condition, lifestyle habits, etc. You have to take care of yourself cautiously, especially after the embryo transfer process.

Side Effects of IVF

The risk and side effects of IVF are long-debated. IVF pregnancy with a single baby is usually considered safe like a normal pregnancy.

IVF pregnancy with multiple babies may lead to early labor and low birth weight.

Other than that the hormone medications may cause bloating, hot flashes, mood swings, and so on which are mostly short-term and will vanish over time.

How much does IVF cost?

IVF in India costs around one to two lakhs of rupees. However, the cost of the treatment varies based on the following factors:

  • The clinic’s fee structure
  • The location of the clinic
  • The medical condition of the patient
  • Treatment package, etc.

The choice of frozen or fresh embryo transfer may also influence the IVF treatment cost. Freeing embryos costs a bit more than using fresh embryos for transfer.

How to Choose a Hospital for IVF Treatment?

Choosing the right clinic or hospital and fertility doctor for IVF treatment is important.

Look into the following check-list before choosing a clinic and fertility doctor for your treatment:

  • Qualifications of the doctor
  • Experience of the doctor
  • Patient reviews
  • Facilities in the clinic
  • Location of the clinic
  • Cost of the treatment
