Understanding Your Due Date (EDD)

Finding out you're pregnant is the start of a beautiful 40-week journey. While "due date" sounds precise, it's actually an estimate of when your baby will be fully developed and ready for birth.

How is the Due Date Calculated?

Most healthcare providers use **Naegele’s Rule** to calculate the Estimated Date of Delivery (EDD). This formula assumes a standard 28-day cycle and calculates 280 days (or 40 weeks) from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP).

The Three Trimesters

• First Trimester (Weeks 1-12): This is a period of rapid development. The baby's heart begins to beat, and vital organs start to form. You may experience morning sickness or fatigue.
• Second Trimester (Weeks 13-26): Often called the "golden phase," nausea typically fades. You'll start to feel the baby's first movements (quickening), and the baby's features become clearer.
• Third Trimester (Weeks 27-40): The baby grows quickly and prepares for birth. You may feel more pressure and stronger kicks as the baby moves into the birth position.

Why Do I Need a Professional Scan?

While a calculator is a great starting point, an ultrasound (dating scan) performed between 8 and 14 weeks is the most accurate way to determine your baby's age and due date. This scan measures the baby's size and checks for a healthy heartbeat, providing peace of mind and essential medical data.
